Hongxi Li's "Sandcastle": A Performance Reflecting on Urbanisation and Fragility

20th September 2024
Hongxi Li's "Sandcastle" at The Stage, Shoreditch

On Saturday 21st September, NEVEN presents an evocative offsite performance by Hongxi Li titled Sandcastle at The Stage. This performance serves as a prelude to Li's solo exhibition, Heaven Green, which opens later in September.

This performance will take place in the ground floor of the Tower Building and is free.

Open to the public, this event promises a great experience with no need for reservations. Doors open at 3:30pm on the 21st of September with some complimentary drinks provided.

Sandcastle is a 30-minute performance by Li that explores rapid urbanisation through Jolene, a character who builds a miniature cityscape in a pit of soil. Using a bucket shaped like a brutalist housing block, Jolene’s actions reflect both the innocence of building sandcastles and the relentless pace of urban growth. Set against the backdrop of The Stage Shoreditch, the performance serves as a metaphor for China’s rapid urban expansion and the fragility of quickly built infrastructure. By the end, the crumbling city and Jolene’s dirt-stained attire prompt viewers to reflect on the true cost of progress.

Join us for Sandcastle on Saturday 21st of September to witness this thought-provoking exploration of urbanisation and its impact on our world.
